Is our worship today centred on experiencing God’s presence or simply maintaining an outward show of devotion?

True centre of worship

In 2 Chronicles 5, Solomon has completed the construction of the temple, and the priests and Levites bring the Ark of the Covenant into the Most Holy Place. The Ark represents the presence and covenant of God among His people. After it is placed in its proper position, the priests and musicians gather together in worship.

What stands out is the unity of the people. Verse 13 says that the trumpeters and singers were “as one” in their worship. They praise God, saying:

“For He is good, for His mercy endures forever.”

Their worship is centred not on themselves, their achievements, or even the magnificence of the temple, but on who God is and His enduring mercy.

Then, something remarkable happens. The temple is filled with a cloud, representing the glory of the Lord, so much so that the priests are unable to continue ministering.

This is a powerful reminder that God Himself should be the true centre of worship. The temple was magnificent, Solomon had accomplished something extraordinary, and the people had gathered in great numbers, but none of these things were the ultimate focus. Everything pointed towards God.

It is easy for us to become distracted by the visible things in our Christian service: our ministries, programmes, responsibilities, achievements, or even our knowledge of the Bible. Yet 2 Chronicles 5 calls us back to a simple truth: the purpose of all our service is to honour God and to recognise His presence among His people.

Notice also that the people were united. Their voices, instruments, and hearts were directed towards the same God. There is great spiritual strength when God's people put aside personal preferences and seek to glorify Him together.

Perhaps we need to ask ourselves: Has my service for God become more important to me than God Himself? We can be busy doing things for the Lord while slowly losing our simple wonder and awe at who He is.

May we learn from Israel's worship - to come before God with united hearts, humble spirits, and thankful praise, remembering that His steadfast love endures forever.

Reflection questions

  • Have I become more focused on the physical aspects of serving God than on knowing and honouring God Himself?

  • Is there anything that is hindering unity between me and other believers?

  • How can I cultivate a greater awareness of God’s presence in my daily life?
