In 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul addresses the Thessalonians concerning the deceptive lies they have heard about the second coming. Let us take a moment to reflect on our own preparations for the Judgment Day.
Detecting falsehoods in this increasingly deceptive world
The Thessalonians were frightened by false teachers saying that the day of Christ had already come – did they miss the coming of Jesus? Had their endurance and hard work been for nothing? Upon learning of this, Paul reminded them again of the truth that they had been taught from the beginning: “that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed” (2 Thess 2:3)
Let us also remember the teachings concerning the second coming: the Antichrist prophesied in Daniel 7 that will rise up in the last days, “speak pompous words against the Most High” and “persecute [His] saints” (Dan 7:23-25). Additionally, Satan will work through “powers, signs, and lying wonders” (2 Thess 2:9) to draw people away from the truth; and lead them to let down their guard against the evil one.
Today, we are even closer to the second coming than the Thessalonians. How can we keep ourselves prepared for the eventual arrival of our Lord Jesus?
Beware of being led away from the love of the truth
Next to the ideals of the world that promote open-minded, liberal love, our church doctrines may look outdated and even narrow-minded. However, Paul states that those who do not receive the love of the truth, but are led away by unrighteous deception, will ultimately perish (2 Thess 2:10).
While the truth may not always look as pleasant as the ideals of the world, it is undoubtedly the only way we can receive the kingdom of heaven (Mt 7:21). Let us be those who cherish God’s truth to the death, for then we will be able to overcome the clutches of deception and receive salvation from the power of Christ (Rev 12:11).
Beware of distractions that grant us momentary peace and happiness
As we journey along, the Internet will flood us with images of luxurious lifestyles and beckon us to follow suit, reminding us that we have only one life to live…If we are not careful, we may end up partaking in the unrighteousness of satisfying our lusts, and forget that we are waiting for our Master to return. (Lk 12:45-47)
The Thessalonian believers were extremely diligent and anxious in watching out for the second coming. This kept them motivated to stay holy and always working persistently for the Lord, despite the hardships they faced. (1 Thess 1:3-4, 9) Likewise, we ought to be like these believers – never thinking for a moment that we still have plenty of time to prepare, but instead seeking urgently to cleanse ourselves and change our lifestyles to be more God-pleasing.
The days leading up to the Judgment Day will only get tougher and tougher. Let us strengthen ourselves in the hope of grace given by God, and rely on His strength to continue our good works in faith. (2 Thess 2:16-17)
