Sometimes, we think about telling others about God only during big moments, like getting good grades or winning competitions; we forget that God often gives us small, quiet chances in everyday life.

A sister in church recently started working at a new job. She was often busy and tired, and assumed it would be hard to ever talk about God at work.

One day, she was asked to join an emergency team at work. She didn’t like the offer because it meant more meetings. But, through those meetings, she made a new friend. She and her friend didn’t enjoy the meetings, but they enjoyed talking to each other.

After the final meeting, her friend would ask her to take breaks together. They would sit outside the office, rest, and chat. Deep inside, the sister felt that God might want her to share her faith, but she wasn’t sure how.

While going to get frozen yogurt, her friend asked what she was doing on the weekend. She told her friend that she was involved in church choir practice, then gently asked if she believed in God. Her friend shared that she used to believe, but stopped after something very sad happened in her family. She wondered why bad things happen if God is loving.

The sister listened carefully and did not interrupt her friend. She shared how God helped her through hard times too. She and her friend didn’t agree on everything, but they spoke kindly and honestly, and felt closer as friends after each interaction.

That day, the sister thanked God. Even though her friend wasn’t ready to believe again, God used a simple conversation to share His love. Let us never doubt how God can use us, right where we are.

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why did the sister not want to join the emergency team at first?

  • How did God use that situation to help her make a friend?

  • Why is listening important when someone is sad or confused?

  • What are some small ways you can show God’s love to others?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for being with us everyday.

Help us notice both the small and big chances

You give us to show love,

And how to use our words and actions to do so.

Teach us to listen kindly and speak gently,

Especially when those we care about

Are hurting or have many doubts.

Hallelujah, Amen.
