Forgetting our Heavenly Father

Have we unknowingly left our Heavenly Father behind?

One of the greatest spiritual dangers we face is forgetting God. This forgetting does not usually come from our ignorance, but often from familiarity, times of peace, and misplaced trust in ourselves.

Forgetting God’s Grace and Providence

"As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." (2 Peter 1:3-4)

Read verse 3 carefully. We have received not just some things, but all things. All the answers to life and godliness, we have them.

Verse 4 expounds on how we may be partakers of His divine nature. Think of what this means! This is an astonishing gift that God gave to mere men: the power and opportunity to be partners with God’s divine nature through the Holy Spirit and the blood of Christ.

Yet, despite having all these, we may feel that we are lacking in this world. We feel like we are not blessed. We always want more; we search for answers and satisfaction in this world. We make excuses when we sin, blaming it on human nature. We rely on our own experiences and knowledge to make our decisions instead of putting God first in our lives.

Forgetting God’s Greatest gift: Our Salvation

The wages of sin is hell. Have you thought about what hell will be like?

Living in the lake of fire — that was our home.

The worm that is burned but cannot die — that was us

That will also be the home for the people on earth who do not repent and believe in God — the people you see on the streets, or the "coffee aunty" who brews your daily coffee.

We have the doorway to heaven because of Jesus Himself. We can enjoy eternal glory and joy because we believe and are baptized in Jesus’ name. 2 Peter 1:9 aptly concludes this point:

"For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins." (2 Peter 1:9)

Let us reflect on whether we are spiritually blind to the point where we have forgotten the consequences of our sins.

Forgetting God because we are not thankful

"...because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened." (Romans 1:21)

The main reason we forget is simply that we are not thankful. God’s grace is clear—the Israelites witnessed the pillar of cloud and fire leading them daily; the ten lepers were healed. But in the story of the lepers and the israelites, all of them forgot about God’s deliverance. Only one Samaritan came back to thank God!

For those who love numbers: only 10% of those who experienced God’s grace were thankful enough to return to him.

Our Action Plan

Are we part of this 10% who remember God’s faithfulness?

“I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds.” (Psalms 77:11-12)

We must deliberately make the effort to remember God’s works lest we fall and forget Him. We must always meditate on all His work and talk about His faithfulness. Coming to church is a great avenue to do all three.

In our lives, let’s strive to:

1. Set aside 30 minutes a day, even in busy periods, to list the things God has provided for you.

2. Meditate and pray to thank God for those specific things daily.

3. Make it a habit to share these testimonies with your friends in church.
