God Meets Us in Our Need

God met a widow's debt, a mother's grief, and a famine's hunger with what His people needed. Today, He still does.

A widow came to Elisha with nothing. Her husband, one of the sons of the prophets, had died and left her in debt, and now the creditor was coming to take her two sons as slaves (2 Kgs 4:1).

Elisha asked what she had in the house. One jar of oil. He told her to borrow empty vessels from her neighbours, shut the door, and pour. The oil kept flowing until the last vessel was full, enough to sell, clear the debt, and live on (2 Kgs 4:2–7). She needed money, and God gave her exactly that, out of the one thing she had left.

Read on, and the same thing keeps happening. A Shunammite woman, long past childbearing, is given a son; when the boy dies on her lap, God raises him (2 Kgs 4:16–37). During a famine the prophets eat from a pot with "death" in it, and God takes the poison out (2 Kgs 4:38–41). When the food runs short, twenty loaves feed a hundred men with bread to spare (2 Kgs 4:42–44).

Each need was met with exactly what it required: money for the debt, life for the dead son, the poison drawn out of the pot, bread enough for the hungry. He came close enough to see precisely what was missing, and He supplied that very thing. It came at the moment the need was sharpest, when the creditor was already at the door and the boy already dead.

That is the God we have. "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil 4:19).

All your need: the bill you cannot pay, the diagnosis you did not want, the child who will not come home, the answer that still has not come. He sees the exact thing you are short of, and He is able to meet you there.

These stories come from Elisha's day, when faithfulness to God was costly. The royal house had pushed the nation into Baal worship and hunted down the prophets of the LORD, leaving those who stayed loyal a poor and pressured minority.

It could look as though He had left His servants to fend for themselves. He had not. He was near, and He was enough, one exact provision at a time. He has not changed. Whatever your need is tonight, bring it to Him plainly. He knows what it is, and He meets His people where they are.

Prayer

In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Father, thank You that You do not answer from far away, but come near to the exact place where I am hurting. Thank You that even in the hardest seasons You have never left Your people to fend for themselves. You know the thing I am short of right now. [Name it before Him.] I bring it to You plainly, and I ask You to supply my need according to Your riches in glory. Teach me to wait for Your timing, and to trust that Your hand is already at work. Amen.

Reflection questions

  • Think of a specific time God supplied the exact thing you were short of. How did He provide, and what did it show you about Him?

  • What is the one need you are carrying right now? Name it plainly before God, the way the widow told Elisha exactly what was in her house.

  • Why is it sometimes difficult to trust that God will give us what we need?
