In Our Comfort Zones

Is God as happy as us with where we are in our Christian lives today?

A few years ago, I had to finish a big log book for an exam. I was given months to work on it, so I thought to myself, “I still have time.”

The months flew by and sooner than I realised, I was left with one week before I had to submit the log book. I could not be any further from completing it. To make the deadline, I stayed up late for three nights in a row. This experience taught me an important lesson: we may start well, but we must not become too comfortable and lose our enthusiasm.

This lesson applies to our faith. Sometimes, when we feel relaxed and at ease, we stop paying attention to God. We pray less, read the Bible less, or accidentally disobey God. This is called complacency—when we stop being careful because we think nothing could possibly go wrong.

In the Bible, God warned the people of Israel of their complacency. They were God’s special people, but they took God and His commands for granted. God told them to listen carefully to His words and humble themselves before Him. He wanted them to go back to the basics—listening, obeying, and trusting Him.

When we become too comfortable in our faith, our good habits can slowly disappear. Things we once cared about—like going to church, praying, reading the Bible—may not seem to matter so much anymore. Our faith then starts to grow weaker.

Still, God lovingly calls us to return to Him. He wants us to seek Him with all our hearts again, pray and read His Word, and do our best to please Him everyday. Similar to my log book exam story, following God means staying faithful from start to finish, and all the time in between.

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • Are there times when you feel too comfortable and stop doing your best for God? Why?

  • What are some ways you can remind yourself to keep growing for God?

  • What is one simple thing you can do this week to grow closer to God again?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for loving us and caring about our hearts.

Forgive us when we become too comfortable,

and stop paying attention to You.

Help us to listen to Your Word, pray sincerely,

and obey You everyday.

Teach us how to follow You closely until the very end.

Hallelujah, Amen.
