It’s Okay, Not To Be Okay

It’s okay to be sad; yet with God, we find hope and the strength to rejoice again.

There is a common perception that Christians are always cheerful and hopeful, untouched by the struggles of life. We are taught to find joy even in trials, loss, and suffering, because our hope is anchored in the eternal God, not the shifting tides of this world.

Surely, nothing can rock our little boat of joy. Right?

In truth, keeping a joyful heart is not always easy, for our hearts are more fragile than we care to admit. Neither are we spared from the difficulties and challenges of life, as seasons of doubt, pain, loss, and waiting continuously test our hearts.

So, is it okay for us to be sad? Absolutely. We are humans after all.

But while sadness may knock on our door from time to time, we are not called to dwell in it indefinitely.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2).

Joy is expected of us because our hope is not rooted in fleeting circumstances. Our hope is anchored in Him who is faithful through all our seasons, unchanging in His love, steadfast even when everything around us feels uncertain.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

This joy is not superficial happiness, nor does it ask us to ignore our pain. It just means that we can rely on God to carry us through, and take comfort in the knowledge that God is with us, even when the storm rages.

"while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Cor 4:18)

And God invites us to look beyond our current struggles, even in the toughest of seasons.

Sadness may linger for a moment, but do not let it settle.

Because we have God, we can choose hope, trust, and joy. And as we lean on Him, we discover that joy is not the absence of pain, but rather the presence of God’s abidence.

Reflection Questions:

  • What sadness are you holding onto today, and how can you entrust it to God instead?

  • How can you remind yourself that joy is possible, even in this season?

  • In what small ways can you cultivate joy today by leaning on God’s faithfulness?
