Judges Chapter 15 – Reckless Then Repentant

Act first, ask God later.

Our study into the psyche of one of the most well-known judges continues in this chapter. Although Samson’s life was filled with physical and spiritual strength, it was often fuelled by rage and revenge; his reactions always preceded his remembrance and reliance on God’s wisdom and approval.

When the Philistines wronged him, Samson readily retaliated by burning their fields. When they attacked again, he struck them down with the jawbone of a donkey. Even without first seeking, God did not shorten His hand from Samson; He still supplied supernatural strength to secure Samson’s singlehanded defeat of a thousand men.

Only in a moment of helplessness – when Samson grew desperately thirsty, he sought God for deliverance. This is the sole mention of Samson turning to God, almost as a last resort. He accepted and acknowledged that the preservation of His life was a product of God’s perpetual protection and providence.

So, what stands out more to you – Samson’s powerful victories or God’s steadfast mercies?

Throughout the Bible, and particularly in the book of Judges, no matter how many times man failed Him, time and again, God intentionally continued choosing man as testaments that man amounts to nothing if not for His enduring abidance.

Whatever our heart’s plans, do we first seek God’s direction, that we might be able to discern if our desires are founded on personal agenda or on the pursuit of God’s will?

Much as we criticise and disagree with Samson’s character and choices, how much of our own character and choices unconsciously align with His? Do we live as we please, and as and when we need, plead with God? Or, have we fully submitted to the truth that our daily peace is inextricably tied to God?

Reflection Questions:

  • When have you acted out of anger instead of asking for God’s guidance? Why?

  • How can you rely on God’s strength in your challenges today?

  • What areas of your life lack dependence on God?
