Luke Chapter 22 – Prayed for Before We Fall

In moments of temptation and weakness, our comfort is not our own resolve, but Jesus’ prayer for us — that our faith may not fail.

Luke 22 records Peter's denial of Jesus, an incident we’ve probably read and heard many times. Over time, it can be easy to distance ourselves from it and see it simply as Peter’s failure. Yet as I reflected more deeply on this passage, I realised how closely Peter’s experience mirrors my own — warnings to pray that I did not take seriously, an overestimation of my spiritual strength, and the heavy guilt of once again falling short before God. What I find most comforting is that Jesus was not caught off guard by Peter’s failure. Knowing exactly what would happen, Jesus reassured him: “But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail” (Luke 22:32).

Peter, having followed Jesus through His ministry, was not a man lacking in faith. Yet despite Peter’s devotion, Jesus warned him, “Satan demanded to have you” (Luke 22:31, ESV), and went on to predict that Peter would deny Him three times (Luke 22:34). These warnings were serious and stern, revealing the severity of what Peter was about to face.

For us, have we heard the warnings God speaks to us? While Jesus may not tell us directly what mistake we will commit, as He did with Peter, are our hearts in tune with His words through Scripture and sermons? Or do we brush off these warnings, assuming they are meant for someone else?

Despite how serious these warnings were, Peter’s response reveals how easily confidence can overshadow caution in our spiritual lives. He proclaimed, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death” (Luke 22:33). His words sounded bold and faithful, perhaps echoing the promises we ourselves make to God.

Have we unknowingly overestimated our strength and underestimated temptation? Today, this may sound like, “God, even if I work on Sabbath, I promise I won’t stop coming to church,” or, “God, even if I date an unbeliever, I promise I won’t give up on my faith.” The downward spiral into sin often begins with small compromises and overconfidence. Therefore, we must not merely hear God’s warnings, but also pray for our faith.

At the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus instructed Peter, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation” (Luke 22:40). Even before predicting Peter’s denial, Jesus had already prayed for him (Luke 22:32). In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed once more for His disciples’ faith (John 17:11–19), a stark contrast to the disciples, who were found sleeping (Luke 22:45).

Just as Jesus prayed for Peter, He prays for us too. He is our High Priest who sympathises with our weaknesses (Heb 4:15), and He has given us the Holy Spirit to intercede for us (Rom 8:26). Therefore, let us strive to remain watchful and prayerful, coming to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace.

The end of this story is one we know well — Jesus was arrested, and Peter denied Him three times.

“And the Lord turned and looked at Peter… And he went out and wept bitterly.(Luke 22:61-62)

One day, we too will stand before the Lord, and He will look at us. When that moment comes, will we look back at Him knowing we have let Him down despite His warnings, and weep bitterly in guilt? That moment will no longer be the time to respond. But today, while we still have time, Jesus knows our weaknesses and continues to intercede for us (Rom 8:34). He does not ask us to rely on our own strength, but invites us to come to Him — to heed His warnings and remain prayerful, so that our faith may be sustained.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are there any compromises I have been making in my faith that I should be wary of?

  • Strength to overcome weaknesses comes from God. Are there any specific recurring weaknesses or struggles that I should pray for strength to overcome?
