To Go Abroad, or Remain In Singapore? (Part 1 of 2)

Among life’s many choices, one of the seemingly more significant ones is not just what to study, but where to study.

Among life’s many choices, one of the seemingly more significant ones is not just what to study, but where to study. For many of us, studying abroad never crossed our minds while growing up. However, as the time approaches to make this decision, the conversations with our friends or the talks organised by our schools may plant the thought of studying abroad.

Should I study abroad? What are some things to bear in mind?

Is there a church nearby?

Before getting ahead of ourselves, first things first: only consider places with a True Jesus Church nearby. If no church is nearby, choose somewhere else or reconsider studying abroad. If the nearest church is further than what we’re used to in Singapore, then you must be honest about whether you are willing to make that, e.g. two-hour journey to church every week for the next few years.

Even then, speaking to someone familiar with the church's demographic will be good. Is it a prayer house with 50 regular members? A place of worship with 15 regular members? Are there any other youths? What languages do the members usually speak? While these considerations should not put us off studying abroad immediately, we should still take some time to pray and reflect on whether we can accept being in such a church environment for an extended time.

Nevertheless, do remain open-minded. Being out of our comfort zone and in a very different church environment is precisely what makes it so edifying.

1) Financial Considerations

Not all of us come from well-to-do families, and studying abroad could be a significant financial burden on our families. International students have higher tuition fees, with exchange rates often making it even more expensive for us. Scholarships are one option. They often come with a lengthy bond, though, so do take some time to consider if working at that specific company or ministry is what you see yourself doing for at least 5-6 years.

Another option would be to consider countries like Germany with affordable tuition fees, even for international students. If you would like to have the chance to study abroad but lack the financial means to study an entire degree abroad, doing a one-year postgraduate course, semester exchange, or summer school is much more affordable and a valuable experience too!

Even if you do not study abroad, why not use the money spent on leisure overseas travel to attend overseas church training events instead?

Those are really beneficial and edifying.

Reflection Questions:

  • Does my family have the financial means to study a full degree abroad?

  • Is it near a church? What is the church like – a large church with a vibrant youth group, or a small prayer house? How prepared am I to worship and serve in a possibly very different church environment?
