Did you know — the Bible is the best-selling book in the world? Millions have read it, and it’s been translated into hundreds of languages. Even though so many people own a Bible, not everyone really reads it or believes it.

Sometimes, we think to ourselves, “Of what use is the Bible to me?”. Isn't that like saying, “Why do I need a doctor if I’m not sick?”?

The truth is, all of us are suffering with a combination of different types of spiritual sicknesses — emptiness, pain, weaknesses only God can fill.

When we don’t have God or His word in our hearts, we block out that space with temporary things — games, money, fame, and food. No matter what we fill ourselves up with, we are never full.

That’s why we need God’s word. Jesus said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’" (Matthew 4:4). Good food keeps our bodies alive, but God’s word keeps our spirits eternally healthy and strong.

Here are three types of treatment the Bible provides:

  1. Spirit: It teaches us right from wrong. When we read the Bible, God helps us make good choices and stay away from sin.

  2. Soul: It reminds us to follow Jesus’ example — love others and put God first.

  3. Body: It helps us be better at practicing self-control. Instead of doing whatever we want, whenever we want, we learn to use our bodies to serve God and do what’s right.

When we obey God’s word, He fills us with peace and joy. The world may distract us with everything else, but only Jesus can truly make us whole.

Let’s let God’s words be our daily medicine — healing our hearts, guiding our minds, and strengthening us to hold on to the faith and hope in a new life that never ends.

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • How often do you read the Bible? If not daily, why not?

  • What do you feel when you read the Bible?

  • How can you improve the way you read and think about God's word?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for giving us the Bible — Your Word of life.

Please help us to love reading it and doing what You say.

Heal our hearts, fill us with Your peace, and guide us to live the way You want us to.

Hallelujah, Amen.
