God’s Promise
The chapter opens stating Peter’s intention of writing this Epistle: To stir up the minds of believers through reminders. The reminder here is of God’s promise of His return. Even in the time of the Apostles, Peter warns that scoffers will come, doubting and questioning whether our LORD will really return. Today, 2000 years later, it is the same. As we walk our journey of faith, we must remember that amidst all the scoffing and doubts cast by others, our God’s promise is not slack and we must have faith that He is truly coming again.
As proof to the believers that Christ is coming again, Peter reminds them of God’s power through past events that are familiar to them. He reminds them of how God created the world and destroyed it with the great flood. In like manner, just as God’s power continues to sustain our current earth, it awaits its final destruction when He comes again. Though it may seem like a long time has passed, Verse 8 and 9 remind us that God exists outside of time, but His promise is not slack. He provides more time to us in the hope that more of us can come to repentance and receive Salvation.
Constant Vigilance
2 Peter 3:10 tells us that “the day of the LORD will come as a thief in the night”. When that day shall be, we do not know however it is a day bound to come. We must therefore be vigilant and await that day, always striving to be holy in conduct and godliness. Peter warns in the latter part of this Chapter of those who twist Scripture to their own destruction. Knowing this danger, we must hold tightly to the true teachings of the Bible and diligently follow these teachings so that we may be found spotless and without blemish before the LORD.
Though the day will bring destruction to the world we see today, we look forward to the new heavens and new earth in which righteousness dwells. Let us hold fast to our faith and preserve ourselves till that day when we shall rejoice with our LORD.
