Launch Out Into the Deep

And cast our nets far and wide.

Simon Peter was a fisherman from a small village near the Sea of Galilee. Everyday, he threw his nets into the water to catch fish so he could sell them and earn a living. This life he was so used to changed when he met the Lord Jesus.

One morning, Jesus was teaching a large crowd by the lake. There were so many people that Jesus stepped into Peter’s boat and asked him to push it a little away from the shore. From there, Jesus taught the people about God.

After He finished speaking, Jesus said to Peter, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Peter was very tired. He had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. Still, he answered, “Master, we have worked hard all night and caught nothing. Nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.”

When Peter obeyed, something amazing happened! The nets became so full of fish that they almost broke. There were so many fish that two boats were filled and nearly sank.

It was then that Peter realised that Jesus was no ordinary man. Seeing the miracle made him feel ashamed of his sins. He fell before Jesus and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

Jesus did not leave Peter but replied kindly, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.”

Jesus was giving Peter a new mission. Instead of catching fish, Peter would help bring people to God by sharing the good news.

Later in his life, Peter obeyed Jesus again and preached about Him. On the Day of Pentecost, about three thousand people believed in the Lord! Peter truly became a “fisher of men.”

Just like Peter, Jesus invites us to trust His word and follow Him. When we listen to Him and obey, He can use us to help others know His love and truth. Are we willing to be used by Jesus according to His ways?

Family Altar

Use these discussion questions and our prayer as a guide for your family altar.

Parents can lead the prayer and invite their children to repeat after them or encourage their children to take the lead, making family altar time a shared journey of faith.

Discussion Questions:

  • Why was Peter surprised when he caught so many fish?

  • What did Peter realise about himself when he saw the miracle?

  • What does it mean to be a “fisher of men”?

  • How can you share Jesus with your friends or family? Share at least one way.

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for calling us to follow You.

Help us trust Your word no matter how difficult.

Teach us to obey You like Peter did,

Give us courage to share Your love with others,

And allow us to grow in understanding Your truth day by day.

Hallelujah, Amen.
