My First Prayer, and Jesus Was There!

In the name of Jesus I share my testimony.

From young, I was deeply influenced by my parents and especially my grandmother in religious faith. They taught me how to pray and offer joss sticks.

However, I only followed what I was taught to do and did not actually know fully what these religions are, but I was staunch enough to offer joss sticks three times a day without fail.

There was a point of time where I had this very burning question about where I would go after I die. I tried asking my father once and he brushed me away by saying that you are too young to worry about this.

That year was the year when I was in Secondary One.

There was one evening that my father felt pain on his abdominal area because he had last stage of liver cancer. That night he was in so much that he was literally tossing and moaning on his bed.

At that moment the phone rang.

When I answered the phone it was my classmate who wanted to ask me something about homework. I told her that this was not a good time because my father was in pain on the bed.

I hung up the phone.

Then the second time she called, and this time she told me that, why don't you try pray to Jesus to help your father?

The moment when I heard the name Jesus, I hung up the phone because I was angry.

My father did tell us that we as Chinese, we should not be believing in any Western gods. So that was the time when I went back to beg the gods for help.

At that moment, the phone rang yet again. When I picked up the phone, it was the same classmate.

She told me that, I am not telling you to be converted or to be baptised at that very moment. You can just pray to Jesus, to ask Jesus for help.

I relented, because all the things, all the deities in my house, they were not helping at all and I was rather angry with them.

I then asked my friend, how can I even pray to Jesus when I don't have His image or at least His picture in my house?

For that, she told me that it is very simple. You just have to kneel down and you pray in the name of Jesus and you can tell Him whatever you want to tell Him. So I was thinking to myself, that was rather simple. So I went behind the room door and I knelt down and with a very sincere heart,

I prayed to Jesus, telling Him that if You are a God, You save my father, You heal my father. If not, You let him be calm and rest for a while.

And with that few words, I stood up and I went to look at my father in his room. Then when I was in my father's room, I saw that he was sleeping and he was snoring away.

When I saw that, I was filled with joy. I realised that Jesus was actually helping me.

I also realised that when I was saying that very short prayer to Jesus, I felt that kind of peace that I've never felt before. After that, my classmate and I decided to look for a church to have services at.

The very first time that I came to the True Jesus Church, it was a Wednesday evening service.

During that Wednesday service, I was rather afraid of the tongue speaking, because I did not understand what was it, and also I couldn't actually understand what were being preached over the pulpit.

Strangely, I felt rather at home and stayed until the end of the service.

The next time when I came back for service, it was also a Wednesday evening service. I had the same feeling of fear, I felt afraid in the very first prayer - I was afraid of the tongue speaking.

However, it was at the second prayer that I felt something different. About 10 minutes into the prayer, I heard very angelic voices above my head. It was just like a group of choir singing very melodious hymns. And after a while, it merged with the tongue speaking.

This whole sensation was very nice and peaceful. My classmate and I thus decided to attend services in this True Jesus Church.

We resolved to attend Sabbath services, but it was not easy for me. Usually on weekends, I would help my brother in the market because he was a hawker selling vegetables. Though it was not easy for me to attend Sabbath services, but I tried my very best. Whenever we could, we would attend Sabbath services.

We continued to attend True Jesus Church and before we knew it, five years had passed. And through the Bible study sessions that we had, I realised that this church is preaching fully according to the Bible.

By that point, I've already decided to be baptised. But because I have not reached 21, I held back.

Later on, a brother told me that if you know what is right to do, you should go for it.

If you know that you need to be baptised in order to be saved, you should just go for it.

I mustered up all my courage, asked for the baptism form, and I signed up.

After handing in the signed baptism form, I started to worry that what happens if my family were to find out that I wanted to get baptised.

What would happen? What would be the situation?

I prayed very hard for God's mercy.

I prayed that God please guide me through, that I want to get baptised, and please help me through that I can be baptised so that I can be saved.

On the day of baptism, it was a Sunday, and usually Sundays in the market it would be very busy.

Again, I started to worry.

How am I supposed to go off from helping my brother to go for baptism.

And so I prayed again in my heart, asking God to guide me.

When the time came, I just told my brother that I had to go. And then without looking at his reaction, I just ran away. I ran home to prepare my extra clothing for the baptism.

On my way back home from church after the baptism, I was again worried about what would happen if my family members were to find out that I've already been baptised.

But when I reached home, I thanked God that nothing happened.

My mother somehow suspected that I got baptised, so she just asked me, did you get baptised this morning?

I answered her, yes, I did, and she did not say anything further.

I used to have this burning question, that where would we go after we die?

And I found this answer in the Bible.

Indeed, man's life is short. We do not have a lot of time to waste.

If we know what is right, we should go for it.

Jesus Christ promised us in the Bible that if we believe in Him, we will have eternal life.

And also, as what Peter said in Acts 2:38,

โ€œRepent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.โ€

This is the promise that Jesus has given to us.

If we want to have eternal life with Him, we must believe in Him and be baptised.
