“Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;” — James 1:19
“Why is the food taking so long?”
“This is so unfair!”
“Why me not them?”
Have you ever complained when something did not go your way? Maybe your teacher gave you extra homework. Perhaps your sibling did not help with the chores. Maybe you had to wait a long time for something you wanted.
Sometimes, there really are problems that need to be fixed. It is not wrong to speak up when something is unfair or unsafe. But, God also wants us to think about how we speak. Do we quickly become angry? Do we blame others before knowing what happened? Do we complain so much we forget to be grateful?
The Bible teaches us to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger". Before complaining, we can pause and ask ourselves: Do I know the whole story? Am I trying to help, or am I causing more trouble? What can I do to make things better?
Picture your friend accidentally spilling a drink all over the table. You could yell, “You are always so careless!” Or you could help clean up the mess and reassure them, “It’s okay. Let’s do it together.” Which response shows kindness?
Being kind does not mean pretending problems do not exist. If something is wrong, we should try to right it. We do not spread anger; we bring peace. We do not only point out mistakes; we encourage each other to do better.
The easiest place to start is not by looking at everyone else. It is by looking into our own hearts. Under challenging circumstances, will we add more fuel to the fire or will we find ways to put out the fire?
Today, we ask God to give us humble hearts that know how to care far more than they complain.
Discussion Questions:
What is something you often complain about?
When something goes wrong, are you quick to blame or quick to listen?
How can you help solve a problem instead of only complaining about it?
What is one way you can show kindness to someone today?
Prayer in Words:
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.
Sometimes, we complain when things do not go our way.
Please forgive us when we are quick to speak,
Quick to blame, and quick to become angry.
Help us listen first and understand others.
Give us kind and patient hearts.
When we see problems, show us how we can help
Instead of making things worse with our words.
Teach us to encourage others and
Carry Your peace and love wherever we go.
Hallelujah, Amen.
